We are looking at bush-hogging 10 acres of well kept horse pasture and using 60" loader for pushing shavings in barn. Have steep incline to lake that we would like to mow. Price quote for M-F $16,000. Kubota $17,500. We don't have relationship with either dealer but feel most comfortable with M-F. We have neighbors with both tractors and they have nothing but good to say about them. Which one do we buy?

I have a 1240 with the 1246 MF loader. I like my MF unit. Most people purchase either green, blue or orangethe red machines are usually left out. To answer your question if I had to do it over again I would buy the MF. Iwas looking at a Kubota L3010 with loader, but the dealer was a jerk. The MF was set-up right the first time it runs great fromday one. I have never had a farm machine, and I own blue and several green units that had a dealer prep goof-up and/or mechanical failures. The MF which is made in Japan is very stout and well made, but so is Kubota. I guess it comes down to which one your more comfortable with. Furthermore $16K for a 1250 and loader is an excellent price. ....

I was faced with the same decision a few months ago. Both Kubota and MF dealer were excellent, but MF dealer was closer and the 1250 just seemed to be more substantial upon close examination. Dealer brought it out for trial and I bought it for right at 16k with loader. It's been a great machine--no regrets. The dealer tells me that MF is the largest farm equipment manufacturer in the world but doesn't market compact tractors too well. I've recently been to Mexico and S. Africa and seen many MFs in both countries. I'm happy with mine. ....

I have owned Kubota, John Deere and M-F tractors. Ten years ago I bought two M-F tractors. I have spent as much on repairs, as the tractors themselves cost. My 1140 (30hp diesel) has needed a new starter, new alternator, new front four wheel drive differential gears, and more than one new battery. In additon, it has always had overheating problems and required $2500.00 worth of injection pump work recently. There are many small additional items as well, and it has only 1254 hours on it. What really bothers me though is that the M-F 216 I bought for $4000.00 in 1993 (which has also had many repairs) is now only worth $700.00. It only has 247 hours on it. I am not impressed at all with these machines. Their design leaves much to be desired. ....

When companys such as AGCO (Massey Ferguson) and Fiat (New Holland & Case-International) buy tractor manufacturers, their only concern is profit. Theydo not even have their own name on their equipment. In my opinion, John Deereand Kubota have much more incentive to stand behind their reputations, and this leads to satisfied customers and higher resale. ....
